As golfers golf and travel takes the air, it's Master's Week, and we welcome you.
SPEAKER_00There are moments in sports that don't just arrive. And the masters. Just exactly that. Every April. The Gulf World makes us pilgrimage to Adjust and I'm going to be able to do what time is to slow down. Just enough to expect to catch up with that.
SPEAKER_09Patrick Reed was uh leading here just momentarily, and then uh in 15 he anxiously uh hit a hit a wood over the green into the water, and uh, you know, he'd be chipping back. It's just a tough day. Beautiful day be a cloudless uh week going into the weekend, and uh I'm fortunate enough to have with me this afternoon uh Mr. Let's see, who is that? James Algio. There you go, James.
SPEAKER_08Hey hey, ready?
SPEAKER_09Well, I had to go through the list of people that appear as co-hosts on the show, and uh, you know, I'm sorry. Sorry that I in any way you know. Yeah, the do that you're you're do. So how is everything out in Pennsylvania?
SPEAKER_08Good. Yeah, everything's good. Nice sunny day today. Mid fifties, no rain, so nothing to complain about.
SPEAKER_09Okay, do you have any barbecue going or any uh southern food going in honor of the uh No, no, no, it's just unfortunately.
SPEAKER_08Some of us uh some of us do work for a living, so yeah, we don't uh don't have that much time.
SPEAKER_09Working for a living is highly overrated, sir.
SPEAKER_08It absolutely is.
SPEAKER_09I don't know why you even worry about that. I don't I don't get it. What's the problem?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, you know, I like to eat and have a place to live.
SPEAKER_09Well, I'll tell you what, the week has been uh living up to uh all expectations. Um yesterday it was wonderful. I'll tell you what, those golfers have been busy in the in the in the winter months because there were a mess of kids running around on the par three contest yesterday. They're having great fun. What a great family day. I mean, um Brooks Kepka was out there and his son uh was having fun playing in the sand, and then all the kids got in the sand, at least he was trying to rake the sand out a little bit. Uh I think there were five or six hole and ones on the par three contest. Oh yeah, the par three contest is a on Wednesday. Uh the Golf Writers Association of America, we had our meeting early in the morning, and you know, it was great to see all the people and uh that are the writers and uh of course um with myself being one of those it's just fun. After uh forty years in the business, uh getting to um see the leadership and the people that really dig out the stories in the world of golf. And um but then venturing on to the course, Art Strickland is also uh here on premises and uh gonna be reporting all week uh about uh what goes on uh behind the scenes. We're gonna be doing our golfers, golf and travel um masters show that Art and I always do, be a wrap-up show later this week. And uh it's gonna be, you know, it's just great. But I mean to tell you there isn't a a blade of grass. Yesterday there were thousands of people. I mean, just thousands of people everywhere walking the property and and uh the families just have fun. Anybody would want to be part of that fraternity and uh being able to take your family there and play. Of course the wives get to walk along, Rory and his daughter Poppy and his wife uh were there and uh enjoying uh with Shane Lowry and um uh Tommy Fleetwood and their threesome and they all had their kids. I mean it was just like a mess of kids. It's just it's just it couldn't be anything but a better day. But now the the Masters has kicked off this morning and it always boils down to if you're an amateur coming here for the first time you're gonna find out why professionals really do well here after a number of years. It's a tough course and you gotta learn how to read these greens and you gotta know what's going on. So it um uh it makes life interesting. Um and they said, you know, if if you had four amateurs playing a scramble, could they beat the pros over four days? Um the thing is probably not. Um probably not reading your pros. So do you have any questions for the wizard of the day?
SPEAKER_08I mean, you know, yeah, I have a little feature that I wanted to do here to see if we could uh you know test your test your master's knowledge a little bit. So I'm gonna see if I can come up with stunt the golf pro. See if I can uh come up with some master's trivia you may not know. So I claim to put down the spot, put down the spot a little bit. So but uh let's uh let's see. If you're game, let's see.
SPEAKER_09I got a couple uh well I haven't changed my underwear for a long time, so I'm very gamey at this point in time. Not not a problem. Whatever I can do to help you, I'm I'm at your beck and will, Will.
SPEAKER_08All right. Well let's let's see if our let's see if our listeners are entertained by this uh by this master. So so it's start out with an easy one. What what was the first year of Masters was played?
SPEAKER_09First year Masters was played. If uh let's see. First year Masters was played. You know what? I knew that was gonna be one of the questions. That would be a great question. I want to say 1939, but I want to say 34 because Horton Smith won it. I was just kidding you because he thought I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_08Nice, all right. So yes, 1934 is the is the actual answer.
SPEAKER_09Right.
SPEAKER_08So, uh and I'm trying to figure out how to phrase this without giving it away.
SPEAKER_09Yes.
SPEAKER_08But but what made the inaugural masters different than every other one after?
SPEAKER_09Huh. What made it different? Was it the name? The Augusta National Invitational Tournament? Was not that.
SPEAKER_07It's not the name.
SPEAKER_09Uh the green jacket wasn't awarded as a trophy, I don't think, on the first masters.
SPEAKER_08Nope.
SPEAKER_09That's not what you're looking for either.
SPEAKER_08That's not it.
SPEAKER_09Um let's see. Bobby Jones, I think, played in it as an amateur in his own tournament. What was different about the first Masters? Well, they didn't obviously have a Masters dinner because there was no there was no winner. Actually the Masters.
SPEAKER_08There was no previous winner.
SPEAKER_09I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_08There was no previous winner, right?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, there was no previous winner, means it was the first one. First, what made it different? Um Did they play let me think about this for a minute. No, they they didn't reverse the nines. What am I thinking on that? Because I know we were just talking about that on another course. What? They didn't have any broadcasting, any television. Uh huh. I don't know, James. You got one. I'm gonna give you that one.
SPEAKER_08You you actually you actually had it and you poo-pooed it and you went right by it. They revered the front and back nines were reversed.
SPEAKER_09All right, then I was right. I mean, I I alluded to it, you know. I knew I got that. Okay, I'm sorry. Yeah, they reversed the nines. Yeah, I knew that. Just did read that this week, and it was a fly by in the middle of the night. All right, go ahead.
SPEAKER_08All right. I'm I'm super impressed because I thought I had you for sure on that one. So here's another one. What is the most popular item that's sold in the gift shop, in the merchandise shop at Augusta?
SPEAKER_09Well, I know that every year they sell out of those little gnomes. Um but is that it?
SPEAKER_08Yep, that's it.
SPEAKER_09You can't you can't get them. I mean, they got an endless supply of flags and you know, all kinds of things. And that and that pro shop, by the way, is just for the gifts. There is a second pro shop just for members that's right by hole number one that non-members cannot go in under any circumstances. So yeah, they have a special logo for members only.
SPEAKER_08And you know, so that's it. That would be that would be cool if it was manufactured by members only, right?
SPEAKER_09A little bit of uh Yeah, yeah, it is. Well, there's a lot of things that go into that. And and I thought Rory, because he was Irish, was probably uh sort of a gnome, a gnome for uh, you know, for dinner, you know, it'd be a go for a fillet of gnome. A gnome, you know. So it was funny he said this week in his news conference, funniest line, they were going over his uh dinner. Uh a little bit of trivia for that. Um uh the dinner was first started uh by Ben Hogan, he wrote uh back um in the day, and uh he uh asked uh the president of Augusta National he'd like to host a dinner of the winners on the Friday night before um the Masters, and that's when the Masters Tuesday night dinner uh began. And um so carrying that forward, being said he was hosting it, he also got to pay for it. Okay.
unknownSure.
SPEAKER_09It's a country club. I mean, that's just the way country clubs work. So anyway, this year I did do a little bit of digging. Um Rory's menu is fantastic. I think we went over that earlier this week, but I mean he had just um and I and I put up on our golfers, golf and travel, if it's not there, it'll be up there today. Uh the chef, as he explained how he cooked all the different um ingredients to his uh to his dinner. Um but uh I'm gonna work on doing my own baked date wrapped in bacon this weekend.
SPEAKER_08Oh that sounds good.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna peel off how he fixed the uh the salmon course and uh um the uh the all um veggie course of uh peaches on a flatbread uh course that he did for uh Gary Player, because I guess Gary is a vegan, which looked great. Uh I don't think the vegan ate the uh uh the big fillet that came out later. But the filet and then the main courses of filet and the and the salmon just look look terrific. And uh so I'm gonna copy all. I'm gonna have my own master's dinner. Um, yeah, it's gonna be a good one.
SPEAKER_07What time should I be there?
SPEAKER_09Uh you can be here anytime. If you can figure out what I'm serving, that would be on time. And uh but if you don't know what I'm serving, you will not be there on time. And uh but I'll probably do it on a Tuesday night just in honor of uh of the masters and in the honor of who won. I had heard that if John Daly ever won the Masters, uh he was gonna go to G Casey's gas station. Do you have a Casey's out by you?
SPEAKER_08No.
SPEAKER_09All right. Well, these are these are big gas stations in the Midwest.
unknownUh huh.
SPEAKER_09And he was you know how that gas station, you know, you got hot dogs and pizzas and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, that was gonna be John Daly's, we heard.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, that would not that would not surprise me in the least.
SPEAKER_09Nope. And there has been uh I think Scotty Scheffler sort of had a skinny down recipe, but none of it was ever bad. But the cool part is is that Rory uh mentioned this week during his you know being Irish, they asked him how come you didn't focus on more Irish, you know, uh items, and he said, Well, I wanted to enjoy my dinner too. So you've never had Irish uh cuisine? Uh you ever been to Ireland or England?
SPEAKER_08I have not been to Ireland, but I've had Irish cuisine, yes.
SPEAKER_09Yeah. Uh particularly our food tastes better, and I think that's what Rory was alluding to. Um there are certain Irish cuisines, and maybe you could find a couple good ones in there. I shouldn't really say that, but I did go I was in our our uh in England and Scotland and uh glad to uh the cuisine was at uh number of years ago. Hopefully they improved it. But we were served a lot of rabbit, and I was like, yeah. Yeah, it was weird. Rabbit and peas and stuff. So yeah. So what else you got for me here, young ladies?
SPEAKER_08All right, so what is the consecutive birdie record?
SPEAKER_09The consecutive birdie record. Six sticks in my mind.
SPEAKER_08How many how many holes in a row did somebody get?
SPEAKER_09Um God, that's a good question. We were just talking about birdies this last week, and guys were talking on and I six stuck in my head, but that was for another guy in a tournament this past week. I'm gonna go with six.
SPEAKER_08Seven.
SPEAKER_09Dang, I d no, I meant seven. I really did. It was gonna be.
SPEAKER_08It was done twice.
SPEAKER_09Yeah.
SPEAKER_08The uh let's see, it was Tiger Woods, of course, was one of them.
SPEAKER_09Yeah.
SPEAKER_08And Steve Paint was the other one. Honestly, the name does not ring a bell, so he must have been must have been an old an old dude.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, no Steve Payton Ben, that's years back, long before you had any interest in it. But yeah, sort of remember what year was that that Tiger did that? Was that his first year in 1997 when he I think it was, yeah.
SPEAKER_08I don't have the I don't have the year guys that did it.
SPEAKER_09But uh who knew it was Tiger. Yeah, Tiger is not getting a lot of Tiger's not getting a lot of mention this week. We wish Tiger well now.
SPEAKER_08Hopefully he's hopefully he's doing well. I could love to see him back out there again.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, everybody wishes him well. Uh and again, I love this quiz. Let's continue. I'm not doing well.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I got a couple I got a couple more. Let's see. All right, so this one is kind of this one's kind of random and it's not exactly pertaining to the professional golfers, but you know, the members have green jackets as well, right?
SPEAKER_09Right.
SPEAKER_08And you're only allowed to wear it on the property, right? It's you're it's a violation to wear that jacket off property.
SPEAKER_09Right.
SPEAKER_08Well, well, at one time a longtime member was once spotted wearing a green jacket off the property. So do you know what his punishment was for that infraction?
SPEAKER_09Is this a member or a player?
SPEAKER_08It's a member, so that's this is kind of eclectic, but it was sold as a member of Augusta National, wearing a green jacket off property. And when the next tournament, when the next master tournament came about, he was given a punishment for that infraction. Didn't know what that was.
SPEAKER_09My first inclination would be is that he would no longer be a member.
SPEAKER_08Um because that's a pretty Yeah, they didn't they didn't go they didn't go quite that far.
SPEAKER_09Didn't go that far. Um he couldn't attend the ceremony when the uh green jacket was being put on because all the members I think sit behind it.
SPEAKER_08I think all the members do, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, and he wouldn't he probably wouldn't have his jacket to be on.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_09I I've never heard this story. Go ahead, tell me what the deal is.
SPEAKER_08They they put they put him on trash duty at the uh at the tournament. So he was uh he was assigned to a trash girl for uh for that whole tournament for the whole weekend. So that would which I think is actually a worse punishment than not being able to go to the presentation of the green jackets of the winner.
SPEAKER_09That is uh awesome story. Yeah, I want uh you gotta tell me, you know, send it to me by email of the year and whatever. That is a great that that is a dig deep one. I love that.
SPEAKER_08Right?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, good job on that one. Alright, continue. I'm enjoying this. I'm enjoying my failure because I'm learning something.
SPEAKER_08So so what is the highest score ever recorded on a single hole in the Masters?
SPEAKER_09Let's see, there was a 13, I know on twelve. Oh god, I mean that that would be such a random that could be over years. I mean do you know that Masters.com has now every shot that they have had on camera is now available. If you want to go watch Tom Watson in the three wood into hole fifteen in nineteen seventy-six, you can go pull that up.
SPEAKER_08Get out of here.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, dead sir, I couldn't believe it.
SPEAKER_08That's a that's a rabbit hole you can go down for hours and hours and hours. Holy holy.
SPEAKER_09I know it. It uh that whole masters.com is at, you know, this year coverage is on Prime and on Paramount and on Disney and on ES Disney ESPN and then regular ESPN and then golf channel. I think I'm not even sure it's on golf channel, and then it'll settle into CBS and Paramount over the weekend. I mean, you you you you're gonna wear out your clicker, you know, trying to figure out where where it's at.
SPEAKER_08Absolutely. I just went to Matt.
SPEAKER_09Well, and no, here's the thing. Go to get the masters.com app, doesn't cost a penny. Right. And uh it's got all the same feeds, okay. And then if you have a TV like mine, you can just, you know, send the feed to your TV. And you got all the feeds in the world. You don't have to go all over everywhere, you know, and all that's pretty much commercial free. So I'm not exactly sure what the thinking is behind that, but the masters always does their I mean they're that masters.com is incredible. And I'm trying to avoid going back to the question that you asked. The highest score could be anything. I'm gonna say I know there's just been big scores on 12 reasons. And that's a par three. And I know there could be other big scores. I'm gonna say 15, just a random guess.
SPEAKER_08No, but you actually did answer it correctly as you were thinking out loud.
SPEAKER_0913?
SPEAKER_08Yes.
SPEAKER_09On twelve?
SPEAKER_08On on twelve. All right, now all right, so one I know this. One time it was on twelve, which is a part three. But on the other two times that it happened were on par five. Thirteen and fifteen.
SPEAKER_09Thirteen and fifteen, yeah.
SPEAKER_08Well So technically, so technically a thirteen on a par three is the worst, right?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_08So I can I can I'll tell you the three guys that did it, but go ahead.
SPEAKER_09Go ahead. I c I'll then I'll tell you what I'll tell you what holes they did. Just give me the three names. Don't tell me where they did.
SPEAKER_08Alright, so tell me.
SPEAKER_09I want to say White Cough on twelve. Huh. All right. Well, I you know, I should just stop overwriting my thoughts when I should just blur them out what I think it is, yeah. Go ahead. If you got any more. No, I enjoyed that. You you should do if we're if we're available to do that tomorrow, you come up with some more. I enjoyed that. I always learn a lot from that. Uh Curtis Strange was leading the Masters one year, uh, and came to hole number thirteen. And uh all he really had to do was lay up and then pitch the pot up on the green and everything would have been good. And uh he knocked it into Ray's Creek a couple of times, lost the Masters on that year. I mean that's just you know the tragic. Jordan Speed, number of years ago, came to twelve and um he was leading, I think, by four shots. And, you know, twelve, and again, I know you don't know all these holes real well, but it's a real iconic part three. And um i it's it's very narrow, and there's the way you play it is is that the pen will be on the right hand side on a Sunday, tucked behind a trap. There's not a lot of room up there, and the rule, if you if you've watched the Masters over the years we have, and the Jack Nicholas rule is you knock the ball into the middle of the green on the left hand side, you do butt and get out of there. You don't go for the flag. Um anyway, Jordan got to that hole. I think he had a four-shot lead, and by the way, left he did not and he end up losing. Uh that particular year. And I don't think he ever recovered from that. And then and they boiled it down to when they analyzed it, is that his nutrition got low. Um, he wasn't you know, probably thinking properly. But by the time you tried to take a drop and, you know, there's raised creek runs right in front of that, um, you know, the ball just rolls into the hole and or it could go into the Azalea's over, or you know, it's just it can be a real mess. If you just hit it in the green, the fat part, take your two and two butts and get out of there. Play it that way. Freddie Couples, a year, he won. Um, the ball hit on the right side of the green, uh, right of the trap, was spinning back into Rayce Creek. Ninety nine hundred and ninety-nine out of a thousand will roll back into Race Creek, and then you gotta drop again and got that terrible little tickly shot. His ball stopped on the side hill. And he got it up and down for a park and went on to win the masters, or he could have lost it in that. Um there are just I know Sergio, I believe, when he took his big number on fifteen, the problem was the ball was spinning back off the green and there and and trying to hit it over the water to get it onto fifteen, and it just kept spinning back and back and back, and I think that's where he took a big number on that. And um, you know, you just gotta you have to really think your way around Augusta National, and as I said again, I'd love to go play it. But it used to be when I played comp and I was never that great playing, but I the only way I was competitive is that I thought my way around a golf course and I always hit for the open shots and hit for the you know, the percentages. And um and again, you know, I don't make a lot of birdies, but I don't make a lot of mistakes and you just you know, you might wear somebody down and end up doing okay. And at the masters, you really gotta know. This morning when I was watching and watching these young kids that are amateurs going out there and they're putting the ball in the wrong spot, trying to thinking they're gonna hit a five foot downhill putt. Well, the way I have always explained it is go to your you know, if you have a basement, take a ball at the top of the steps and then putt it toward the basement and try to get the ball to stop on the fourth step before it hits the basement floor. That's about as much chance as you got is gonna putt, you know, downhill. Yeah, it's three-footers just become things nightmares are made of. Um and it's just gonna get faster and faster this weekend. Tiger used to go practice. I mean he was from Stanford. Whether he did or he didn't, the lore had it that he would go to Stanford and he would putt on the Stanford basketball court to try to get the feel of the speech. Well here's a weird one right now. Scotty Scheffler and Roy McGroy are in second and third. Who knows? What are you gonna do with that? It's all the big all the big names that floated in the tap. And uh it's just gonna be a great, great, uh, great day. Any more questions that you have for me, young game?
SPEAKER_07That was the uh research.
SPEAKER_09That would be awesome. I really love it. Well, a lot of people have asked for this uh this the song again that if you know Arnie and Bobby Jones were looking down from heaven. I've had requests to play it again. I guess people are getting their cassettes all lined up to record it like we did back in the day. But uh coming up then the show I always wondered, you know, what these guys, you know, the famous golfers that have passed on Arnie, Bobby Jones, Fuzzy Zeller this past year, tribute to him. But uh Hogan when they make it to heaven they gotta be playing golf. But do they take time to look down and see what's going on at the Masters? You know, I know I've had a lot of friends that are now heaven playing golf, hopefully together. And um I'm sure when they look overlook my shoulder, they want me to have the masters on as they sit next to me watching it uh this weekend. But that is always a conundrum for us as golfers because we share a lot of time with our golfing buddies, but this is as if the song coming up, and we'll say goodbye right here, James. Thank you for being here. Really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_08Always a pleasure.
SPEAKER_09And we'll be back tomorrow with James L. Gio, Uncle Randy. And this is if Arney and Bobby are looking down. Everybody have a great day. Talk to you soon.
SPEAKER_03When April finds that Georgia sky, and the zillions start to rise. Fairways roll through fields of gold where the greatest stories ever told Still echo through eternity on heaven's own back night. They're watching a gust from heaven tonight, where the greens still shine in eternal light. Still feel the full of gust of dust. Even up to death, it's never enough. It's still what's the best heaven above Bobby Jones with a gentle head, still walks that six timeless left. Right beside him with that grim, the king armed. They lead the groups through heaven's course, with Hogan's silence and iron forced. Like I forgot what it is.
SPEAKER_05Fuzzy's laughing like he always did. Cracking jokes like a playful kid. Now he's joined that heavenly team with those who shape this history.
SPEAKER_03They pause their rounds when Tuesday comes for the champions The quiet, huh? They lean in close, they smile and say We remember that Jack and Day. When the first tea breaks the door, they all fall side. Everyone's Jack and Gary start to play. They tip their caps from far away, and in that breeze, if you listen close, you might just hear what happened. A whisper carries through the pine.
SPEAKER_05They just go back to play another nine.
SPEAKER_09Until Augusta calls them again, well, everybody, hope you enjoyed our golfers, golf, and travel uh Masters edition leading up to the Masters next week. I want to thank James El Geo for joining us, and uh upcoming in our next adventure, we've got uh young Joanne's gonna be joining us, coming into the crowd, featuring all her travels and outlooks on life, which we're really looking forward to in a way that uh is really really meaningful for us, and uh happy to have her join us on the trails. Lc production brandy princess and before the next wave. Always remember leave a better footprint because that's just what my grandfather said. Leave a better mark.
SPEAKER_04It's the love in your words that'll light up the dark. I've walked green fairways and dusty back roads, chase sunsets from here to the sea. I've seen a smile turn strangers to family, and a gentle word set a soul free. Kindness don't cost you a nickel, but it'll buy you the world if you try Blackfoot Princess Sand.
